--- A Bright Hello -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bright (adj.)- splendid, undimmed, and happy
Hi, I'm Kelly. I am a 21-year-old, finishing up my senior year at Michigan State University, and looking forward to finding out what's next!
So, a little about me. I offer a fresh perspective. Just as my academic pursuits source a fresh combination of public policy and communications, my creative and upbeat personality likens me to diverse groups of people and situations. My crisp writing is easily adaptable to any communication medium and illustrates my bright ideas for campaign agendas.
I will be graduating with a dual degree in Communications and Comparative Cultures and Politics and a specialization in Public Relations. While I just finished several internships in New York City, among them a position as an assistant account executive at a general practice public relations agency, I am looking to incorporate my academic interests- public policy, culture, and media- into one dream job. How do I define dream job? I want my future career to allow me to contribute to a salient and current social dialogue in a fun, energetic, and engaging environment. It is my hope, that while I might not change the world, I will certainly be part of something that does.
Getting There...
I know I still have much to learn, but I believe my diverse academic interests, accompanied by my professional experiences gained through internships and previous jobs, set me apart as young, energetic talent looking to contribute to a team. My varied academic background has provided the opportunity to hone and refine my skills in both written and oral communication, as well as my critical thinking and creative problem solving abilities. I work best under a deadline, have the agility to take self-initiative and work with a team, and thrive in energetic environments where thinking on your feet is business as usual.
I have gained valuable professional skills through previous work experiences that have defined the contributions I can lend in a new position. As a new employee, I would offer leadership and management experience that I have gained during previous employment. My jobs as an intern for a public relations agency in New York City and as a senior camp counselor demonstrate these skills best. As an intern, I exclusively handled the accounts of seven authors nominated for the Edgar Awards, was responsible for pitching and booking interviews, and obtaining print and radio placements on their behalf. This, in addition to the various tasks assigned to me by account executives for a wide variety of clientele have given me the confidence to successfully multi-task in a professional environment. Likewise, as a counselor, my multiple duties required an organized schedule. Juggling the interests and emotions of girls ages 7-17 years old, planning hiking and canoeing trips, and designing curriculum for a variety of classes placed me in a variety of unique situations where my creative problem solving skills were tested.
Furthermore, my major in comparative cultures and politics has allowed me to pursue an academic career focusing on culture, policy, and how they relate to create systems of national identity formation. To be successful in the fields of strategic and advocacy communications, one must have intuitive insight as to how these social systems influence the realm of public policy and more importantly, the powers that govern the creation of public opinion. As a new employee, I would polish my skills and knowledge of this relationship within the realm of communications to increase the impact of my messages.
